There’s been plenty of buzz around self care and wellness trends, and it can all seem a bit confusing, but at its core self care is all about taking a little time out for yourself. 

Self care looks different for every individual, but the most important thing is that you dedicate your self care time to doing something you love, just for you, and let the stresses of your daily life just melt into the background for those moments.

1. Breathe deep with aromatherapy

Used for centuries to promote health and wellness, aromatherapy is the ideal way to set the scene and kick off your self care time. It’s one of the most relaxing self care ideas around, so we highly recommend giving this one a try. 

It’s really important that you don’t ingest essential oils or put them directly onto your skin, so we suggest instead using them in an oil burner or diffuser and inhaling the fumes indirectly. 

Set aside a room for yourself, get into soft, comfy clothing and switch on a lamp or light your candle. Get your essential oil going in whatever vessel you choose, then sit back, relax and simply breathe.

You can use the following essential oils for the following effects:

  • Grab a portable speaker that’s safe in bathrooms and pop on your favourite relaxing playlist. Most music platforms have plenty pre-made if you don’t have one handy. 
  • Light candles surrounding the tub (at safe distances of course). Bonus points if they’re scented!
  • Bring your favourite book into the tub with you and let the tale whisk you away to another land. 

3. Indulge in an at home facial

Ah, the classic face mask and chill. 

We’re taking it to the next level with a full, at-home facial. One of our favourite self care ideas around, this will get your skin looking simply sublime, and is a wonderful way of practicing mindfulness. The experience is made even better if you treat yourself to a few luxury self care products! Here’s how to do it:

  1. Start with a double cleanse to get every scrap of makeup off your face. 
  2. Swipe on an exfoliating toner containing lactic or glycolic acid. 
  3. Apply a mask aimed at unclogging pores: we like clay masks!
  4. Follow this with a hydrating sheet mask. 
  5. Using a facial roller, or your fingers, give yourself a facial massage using the serum left over from the sheet mask.
  6. Apply your favourite treatments and serums. 
  7. Seal it all in with a luxurious facial oil.

4. Get your glow on with self tan

It might not seem like your typical idea of self care, but sometimes nothing makes you feel better than a head to toe golden glow.

6. Meditate 

One of the simplest ways to promote relaxation and experience a little self care moment, meditation is perfect when you’re just feeling a bit too stressed and worn out. 

How is meditation a beauty tip, you ask? It’s simple: you can’t glow on the outside if you’re not relaxed on the inside! It’s proven that too much stress can take a toll on our hair, skin and nails, so think of meditation as a long-term investment in all three.

7. Clean out your collection

A good declutter is a great way of practicing self care. Being bogged down and disorganised due to possessions we don’t need or use doesn’t do any favours when it comes to stress and keeping a clear head, and the same applies to your beauty collection!

Go through your skin care products, makeup products and hair care products and sort them into three piles – keep, bin and gift. 

  • Keep: anything you use regularly, truly love or haven’t tried yet (and want to!)
  • Bin: Anything used up, out of date or too gross to gift. 
  • Gift: Any makeup items that just don’t suit you, skin or hair care that doesn’t work for you or you don’t need. Gift them to pals or relatives, just make sure they’re in good nick and hygienic before you do! You can also donate unopened products to charities that need them.

Then all you have to do is sit and steam until it’s time to rinse. The best part? You can leave most hair masks in as long as you want.
