Salicylic Acid for Skin

Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) that works by penetrating into pores to dissolve oil, dead skin cells and debris. This helps unclog pores, reduce blackheads and support smoother, clearer skin. Because it exfoliates both on the surface and within the pore lining, it is especially helpful for oily and acne-prone skin.

Salicylic acid can cause dryness or flakiness, especially at higher concentrations or with frequent use. For many people, starting with a lower concentration and pairing it with a gentle moisturiser helps minimise dryness while still delivering exfoliating benefits. Sensitive or dry skin types may need less frequent use or a product specifically formulated for hydration.

Apply salicylic acid after cleansing and before moisturising, following the instructions on the product packaging. Start with a lower frequency, such as once daily or a few times per week, especially if you are new to exfoliating acids. Always follow with SPF during the day, as exfoliating ingredients can increase sun sensitivity.

Frequency depends on your skin type and tolerance. Many people start with 2–3 times per week and adjust based on how the skin responds. If dryness or irritation occurs, reduce frequency or pair with soothing, hydrating products. Daily use may be appropriate for oily, tolerant skin, but always listen to your skin’s signals.

Salicylic acid is commonly included in routines for blemish-prone and oily skin. It works by exfoliating inside the pores and helping to remove excess oil and dead skin cells. With regular use, it can improve the appearance of breakouts and support a smoother-looking complexion.
